چکیده

Excellent HST/GHRS spectra of interstellar hydrogen and deuterium Lyman-absorption toward nearby stars allow us to identify systematic errors that have plagued earlier work and to measure accurate values of the D/H ratio in local interstellar gas. Analysis of 12 sightlines through the Local Interstellar Cloud leads to a mean value of D/H = (1:50 0:10) 10 ?5 with all data points lying within 1 of the mean. Whether or not the D/H ratio has diierent values elsewhere in the Galaxy and beyond is a very important open question that will be one of the major objectives of the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) mission.

Fuse Determination of a Low Deuterium Abundance along an Extended Sight Line in the Galactic Disk

We present a study of the deuterium abundance along the extended sight line toward HD90087 with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE). HD 90087 is a O9.5III star located in the Galactic disk at a distance of ∼ 2.7 kpc away from the Sun. Both in terms of distance and column densities, HD 90087 has the longest and densest sight line observed in the Galactic disk for which a deuterium ...

The Deuterium-to-oxygen Ratio in the Interstellar Medium

Because the ionization balances for H I, O I, and D I are locked together by charge exchange, the deuterium-to-oxygen ratio, D/O, is an important tracer for the value of the D/H ratio and for potential spatial variations in the ratio. As the D I and O I column densities are of similar orders of magnitude for a given sight line, comparisons of the two values will generally be less subject to sys...

Deuterium Abundance toward Wd2211−495 : Results from the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (fuse) Mission

We present a deuterium abundance analysis of the line of sight toward the white dwarf WD2211−495 observed with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE). Numerous interstellar lines are detected on the continuum of the stellar spectrum. A thorough analysis was performed through the simultaneous fit of interstellar absorption lines detected in the four FUSE channels of multiple observati...

Tracking the Post-bbn Evolution of Deuterium

The primordial abundance of deuterium produced during Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) depends sensitively on the universal ratio of baryons to photons, an important cosmological parameter probed independently by the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) radiation. Observations of deuterium in high-redshift, low-metallicity QSO Absorption Line Systems (QSOALS) provide a key baryometer, determining th...

The Effect of an Increased Elemental D/h Ratio on Deuterium Fractionation in the Cold Interstellar Medium

Measurements using the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) show that the gas-phase D/H ratio in the solar neighborhood is highly variable and suggest that the elemental abundance of deuterium in the Galactic disk may be higher than previously thought. We investigate in this Letter the possible consequences of such an enhanced D/H ratio on the deuterium fractionation in singly and mult...
